Originally developed for metalworking, the gearbox punch is also useful in the woodworking shop.
Copying a hole pattern from a machine part to the mounting base by turning a pencil in the hole rarely works properly. In most cases at least one hole will come out for dinner, and you will need to drill several times as many holes to line up the closure.
With a set of metal stamps, called portable stamps, you can eliminate the Fred Flintstone method and mark the exact center of the holes each time. I often use mine to transfer hole patterns, but they are also useful for many other jobs.
Kit of 28 pieces – from 3/32 to 17/32.
The most common punching set contains 28 punch sizes, ranging from 3/32 to 17/32 inches, ideal for the home workshop.
They are also available as letter drills, wire drills and in metric sizes, but the average carpenter will rarely find them necessary.
Imported kits, as shown in the picture on the right, are in the twenty-dollar range, but the upper limit for brands can be eighty dollars or more. Import kits are more than enough for woodworking, although this cheap kit from Amazon does.
Further examination of the punch tip.
The tip of the punch is as sharp as a middle part, but much shorter. This makes it possible to use it in flat openings while communicating with the side walls of the openings for greater accuracy.
The tips at the ends of the punches are normally hardened and tempered for use on steel. So if you only use them on wood or plastic, they should last forever.
With transfer stamps
Transfer the hole of the fastening screw of the table saw set to the oak plank.
In the picture on the right I use my storage table saw, which serves as a model for the production of a playless oak table saw.
After tracing the circumference, I use a punch to mark the center of the screw fixing hole and the four alignment holes.
Choose the punch that best fits the hole. A light blow with a small hammer is enough to leave a good blow in the middle of the tree.
You will find many applications for these punches, from the installation of vices to the workbench for rigging and calibrating.
There is nothing worse than drilling a hole in the middle and extending it with a grater to level it. Sticky. Take a set of these drills and drill your holes carefully.
